What is Putts per Greens-In-Regulation (G.I.R.)?
This true measure of putting skill averages the number of putts only for those greens made in regulation.
When a green is made "In Regulation" it is typically with an approach shot of 100+ yards, which means the first putt is likely to be from a much greater distance, than when chipped up within 5-10 feet of the flag.
Many golfers who make marked improvements in their approach game find that their putting game seems suddenly weaker than usual. But this is a normal due to the greater demands on their skills from having to take their first putt from much farther away more often.
